Daegu-Busan KTX Route Completed
The second phase of the Seoul-Busan high-speed railway connecting the southeastern city of Daegu with the southern port city of Busan was completed on Thursday, reducing the travel time from Seoul to Busan by 22 minutes to two hours and 18 minutes.Service on the new route will officially begin on Monday at 5 a.m. A ceremony Thursday to mark the opening of the new route was attended by Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik, Minister of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs Chung Jong-hwan and Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik.
The KTX-Sancheon leaves Busan Station after the opening ceremony for the Busan-Daegu route on Thursday.
Construction of the new route began eight years ago and a total of W7.95 trillion (US$1=W1,117) was spent on the project. Now the entire 417.5 km high-speed railway has been completed 19 years since construction started at a total cost of W20.73 trillion. "The government plans to boost the role of the railways and reduce dependence on roads and expand the bullet train network so that it is possible to reach any part of the country within an hour and a half," the prime minister said. With the opening of the new route, the transport ministry expects the number of daily KTX users to rise about 27 percent from 106,000 to 135,000.

Come and experience the thrill of dragon boating and canoeing in the eco river, Taehwa!In a Taehwagyo-Ulsangyo section from April 5 to June 5Ulsan Metropolitan City announced that free ‘Dragon Boating Lessons’ will be given in Taehwagyo–Ulsangyo from April 5th to June 5th to promote citizens’ health and leisure activities. ‘Dragon Boating Lessons’ will be available from 14:00 to 18:00 during weekdays and from 10:00 – 12:00 and 14:00 – 17:00 on weekends and holidays. If companies, schools, institutions and citizens want to participate in this program, they need to submit an application through the website (www.ulsancanoe.co.kr) or in visit the office in person. A ‘Dragon Boating’ team requires 10-15 members. For canoeing however, there is no restriction on the number of rowers. Ulsan City has posted professional instructors and life guards and prepared a marina, 4 dragon boats and 20 canoes for ‘Dragon Boating Lessons.’ For more information, contact the Ulsan Metropolitan City Division of Sports(T. 052-229-3781) or the Ulsan Canoe Federation (T. 052-292-6173, 011-594-5225). ‘Dragon Boating Lessons’ for the 2nd half of the year will be available from October 20th to November 20th.

Completion of the New Ulsan City Hall Building The construction of the new Ulsan City Hall

Building was completed in just 3 years proving to be a new model of frugality and efficiency. Ulsan City invested a total of 63.6 billion won in establishing an administrative environment that befits its metropolitan administration and completed the construction of a new Ulsan City Hall Building that began on December 28th, 2005 in area covering 29,314㎡ with 38,748㎡ of floor space. The building is adjacent to a new parking lot building and is located at 182,Jungang-ro,Nam-gu.The building was completed on December 27th, 2008The floor space of 'New City Hall Building', a 13-story building with 1 basement floor, is 22,356㎡, and that of its parking lot, a 8-story building with 2 basement floors, is 16,392㎡. As for the main facilities, the new building consists of a 'Large Conference Room' with a seating capacity for 500 people on the 2nd and 3rd floors with an area of 687㎡. The 'Large Conference Room' will be used for public hearings and briefing sessions for citizens. 'International Conference Room' which can be found on the 4th floor covering an area of 166㎡. The 'International Conference Room' will have the ability to provide simultaneous interpretation services in 4 different languages. The new building also includes Citizens' Hall on the 2nd floor covering an area of 600㎡. The hall will cater for cultural exchange events including exhibitions, performances, etc. And finally the 'Sky Garden' rooftop covering an area of 496㎡ from where you can view the entire city from an observatory.As for the 'Parking Lot' it can accommodate a total of 484 vehicles in its floors (2 floors underground and 7 floors above the ground). The parking lot space has expanded to accommodate a total of 709 units including existing parking facilities (outdoors and Assembly Hall). The Taehwa River Hall restaurant can be found on the 1st floor of the building with a seating capacity for 400 people.In addition, as the main building plaza was renovated into a Theme Park with an area of 4,600㎡and a Square with an area of 1,600㎡ along with the establishment of the new city hall building, this is expected to contribute to facilitating communications with citizens. In the meantime, Ulsan City plans to relocate offices (The Mayor' Office and 21 Bureaus and Departments) into the new building for 3 days from January 16, 2009 to January 18, 2009 in order to open a new chapter in the era of metropolitan administration in the new office building. A simple opening ceremony will be held as an event to promote citizens' unification in February 2009.

2009 Ulsan Ganjeolgot Haemaji (Sun Salutation) Festival
Dawn breaks in the Korean peninsular only when the sun rises in Ganjeolgot in Ulsan2009 Ulsan Ganjeolgot Haemaji (Sun Salutation) Festival is held featuring many diverse events. Ulsan City announced that it would hold the 2009 Ulsan Ganjeolgot Haemaji Festival in an effort to promote Ganjeolgot, the first place to see the sun in the Korean peninsular as Korea’s best sun salutation site and raise public awareness about this culture and tourism city. According to plan, the Ganjeolgot Haemaji Festival will have the theme, “Dawn breaks in the Korean peninsular only when the sun rises in Ganjeolgot in Ulsan.” The festival will take place from 7 p.m. on December 31st to 10 a.m. on January 1st, 2009. The festival includes a pre-event, a sun-salutation event, permanent and auxiliary events and a special event. The pre-event is divided into Fantastic Festival Parts 1 and 2 and will be held on December 31st from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. It will feature orchestral and Gayageum performances and a concert that will include popular singers. New Year’s Event will include the New Year’s Countdown, a Razor Show and a Thematic Fireworks Show to conclude the ‘Year of the Mouse’. The sun-salutation event is divided into Festival of Hope Parts 1 and 2 held from 6:30 a.m. to 9a.m. on January 1st, 2009 featuring various drums performances, a wishing dance, recitation of poems, Hit the Jackpot Game, sun-salutation (7:31:30), folk songs and a prize draw. The permanent and auxiliary events include a bull statue signifying the Year of Bull in 2009 in addition to Tower of Hope, Luminarie Tunnel, Haemaji Theater and a Cultural Exhibit. The special event will feature a boat parade and kite flying experience. In the meantime, Ulsan City will hold ‘2009 Haemaji Festival Organizing Committee Meeting’ (Chair Administrative Deputy Mayor Pil-eon Seo) on the 3rd floor in the situation room at 3 p.m. on December 15th to discuss a detailed plan by sector.
